While small molecules are ubiquitous and readily available, most of them are inert, and their chemical transformations are thermodynamically demanding and/ or mechanistically complex. In many cases, such processes involve multi–electron redox steps, coupled with proton transfers, via reaction pathways that are difficult to comprehend. Identifying the mechanistic bias and operational principles of such reactions represents a formidable pursuit to the chemical sciences, and addressing these challenges is essential for the design and development of efficient catalysts.
